I have a big problem whenever i am singing. I was advised not to hold my breath when singing. But i have this habit of holding my breath. I need to get rid of it as soon as possible, cause in about 1 - 2 months, i am going to have an audition. Do you guys any idea how to breathe in and out properly when singing? Any idea how to get rid of it? Do help me. And i can't really afford a singing lesson or class, it's too expensive. It's like over $200-300. This is why i am asking for your help guys. Anyway any tips to improve singing and advise how to prepare myself for the audition? THANKS A LOT! ^^

Answer:
Well, if you just try one voice lesson (with someone who doesn't charge more than $50 an hour - check out www.takelessons.com to find a voice teacher in your area), the teacher will be able to see what exactly you are doing to hold your breath and will be able to give you practical advice on how to breathe correctly. Learning how to breathe correctly takes time and training. One good way might be to walk around the room while you are singing. That usually frees things up. And then little by little, you revert to standing still. If you notice you are holding your breath again, start walking again, until you can get back to standing still without holding it. Good Luck!

Why are you holding your breath? Are you nervous? Is it just a lousy habit from always doing it that way? Is it because you don't know when to take breaths and so you keep it like a "reserve"? Figuring out why might help... Aside from that, like any bad habit, you need lots of repetition to get rid of it. You should dedicate some practice time to just paying attention to when you're holding your breath, and stop doing it whenever you realize. If you don't know when you're doing it, you can get a friend who can signal you when you do it. After some time singing, breathing should come somewhat naturally in most cases. Since you're used to holding your breath, you might need to consciously go through the song, line by line, phrase by phrase, and figure out when you want to breathe in. Write it down if you need to. For each line, sing it, and make sure you have the air for it. After singing a line, breathe out and then back in for the next line. It might help if you breathe on rhythm. When you're about to sing a line, you might breathe in on beat 3 or 4 of the music before that line. I find this also helps with timing when you start singing a line. Be prepared for the times you know you need to breathe in - and breathe OUT before breathing in! I know when I sing, a lot of times I'll have more air for a line in the song than I need, so when it ends I breathe out all the extra air and then breathe in deeply again. It helps keep that feeling of rhythm going.
