Have I damaged my singing voice?

Is my singing voice damaged forever?

  • I'm 21, and have been smoking since I was 15. I used to have a beautiful voice and the ability to go soprano. now my voice is weak and scratchy, and I can't hit soprano notes. I cough ALOT (every day) and clear my throat alot. Do you think the coughing and smoking has damaged my voice permanently? Please don't tell me to quit,....I'm already quitting right now.

  • Answer:

I know plenty of smokers who can sing just fine, so I don't think smoking has completely ruined your voice. It can change your voice, however, but there are a few ways to get it back. How often do you sing? It could just be that you're out of practise. Vocal lessons from a teacher might be able to save your voice and help you improve. Drinking a lot of water and doing vocal warm ups help a lot too.

I agree. ^^ I don't think you would be able to sing. Especially soprano.

i think, for as long as you've been smoking, that you have permanently damaged your voice. and as for all of your coughing, you might want to make sure you don't have cancer.
