Where can I get singing lessons?

• I live in Indiana near Indianapolis and I want to learn to sing. I don't have a very good voice, my mom makes fun of it, but some people say it's not that bad and that I have potential. My step-dad said I have a "country singer" voice. But my voice is pretty terrible. How can I improve it? I'm more of an alto just to say.

  There a number of programs that you can buy that will help improve your voice including your vocal range. However there are also a number of free on line resources that you can access and use immediately. It is best though to start working with a teacher who will guide you lest you do more harm than good and then eventually you can carry on own your own. Start with breathing exercises such as inhaling and exhaling through a straw or panting like a dog or hissing to name but a few. It can be argued that singing is 80% good breadth control and 20% technique. Then move onto vocal exercises such as those by the great choral conductor Robert Shaw that are freely available on line. There is a vocal exercise for correcting every vocal fault and that is where your vocal coach will come in. Find out about a good church choir in your area. Check out the choir director of the choir he/she may help you with resources and guidance. As a church choir the resources will likely be free.
