Do you need to take singing lessons to improve?
-
Hello there! Do you need singing lessons by a Singing instructor/teacher to improve your singing? I love musical theatre and really want to improve my singing in the high pitches to become more free to play a wider range of roles. Eg Dorothy from The wizard of oz, Annie and more (My theater group might be holding the wizard of oz soon and I really want to be Dorothy) My singing has improved a lot since I was younger just by practicing (Yes I make sure I warm up properly first and stop any moment my throat strains or becomes sore) but it's not good enough to play any lead roles in Musicals I don't think. I'm an alto and just want to be able to reach a few high notes to sing songs like Over the Rainbow. Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated! By the way, does practicing make you become better? I mean Practice makes perfect, right? Obviously I'm not a singer or anything but I have a piano and the notes I can reach easily are from F (below middle c) to F (above the c above middle c so that's Top C I think? It's 14 notes anyway) Any help would be great! Thank you very much in advance!(:

Answer:
You don't necessarily need a teacher to improve your singing, but it's always a good idea. If you don't have a teacher, some good exercises to improve your range are scales (starting from your lowest note and working up in octaves til you can't hit the top notes, then going back down again), and sirens (again, start from your lowest note, but sweep up your register until you can't go any higher, then come back down til you can't go any lower). Of course practicing will make you better, provided you stretch yourself. It may also be a good idea to at get a book (or a .pdf) of singing exercises specifically for altos.

Mm . . . I don't know much about singing, especially since I suck at it. But I say getting a singing instructor/teacher may help. They might teach you something you didn't already know. But then again, you might not. But I'd go with getting an instructor/teacher just in case they can teach you something you didn't already know. And I say practice does help. I say this because I use to be in band and sometimes reaching the higher notes was hard because it took a lot more air. But when I practiced I got better because I got use to it. So if practice stuff yer not good at and experiment around you'll get better because you get use to doing it. It's sort of like when you first start using something . . . such as a phone. At first you don't really know what it does but after a while of using it you get use to it and know how to use it better. Hope this helps. Good luck!
