What do you do in your First Singing Lesson?

My throat hurts after having my first singing lesson?

  • I had my first singing lesson today. I went well and I really enjoyed it, but now my throat kind of hurts. My vocal coach is classicaly trained and very knowledgable about singing, so I know for a fact she's training me properly. Trust me. So I'm wondering is this normal? I'm actually kind of prone to sore throats, so what do you think this is? Is it because my vocal chords are stretching and now they're sore? lol. Or should I worry about it?

  • Answer:

Depending on how often you seriously sing can effect your chords. I would bring this up with your private teacher. She may be pushing you too hard for a beginner as the voice must be gradually developed. To try and prevent over use you can gradually warm up and sing daily. I would also recommend recording your lesson so that you can listen as an outsider to the sounds created, you may find that you are being worked at a much higher level then your voice is mature enough for.

Singing should never hurt. The next time you see her you should tell her this so she can help you fix this. I'm sure she's a great teacher, but it's possible that you were relying on your throat to produce the sound too much.
