I have a singing problem.

A problem with singing?!?!?! can anyone PLEASE help?

  • I've always been shy sort of and nervous to sing, dance, and act in front of people. My dad found this modeling audition for me THIS SATURDAY for modeling and singing. For the modeling, all I have to do is walk, but for singing, I have to sing a song for 30 seconds, acapella. Are there any metho you guys have for overcoming my fear of singing? does anyone know why I do this? And I don't like for people to look at me when I'm snging. I never just sing and I always set up a lot of explanations for why I may not sound the best, and I never just sing my heart out. My voice always gets shaky and dry, and my throat closes!

First, drink a lot of water. It will help with your throat. Also, try not to fidget with your hands when you sing. This will make people look at you even more. Sing as loud as you can and push with air from your stomach, it helps give you power when you're nervous. Don't stare at the audience/judges. Look at the top of their heads or a little bit above their heads. It will appear to the judges that you are looking at them, but really you aren't. Don't ever give excuses. Judges hate to hear them, they've probably already heard any excuse you could give them. Everyone gets nervous. Just take deep breaths and relax. You'll be fine. Most of all just have fun with it. If you really want to be a singer/model then nothing should stop you. Break a leg! :)

What I do before I get onstage, I squeeze my hands into fists for as long as I can, then I slowly let them go. Also, you can try some different breathing techniques. When you're singing, focus on something other than the people in front of you. Usually what I do, is there is an Exit sign in our sanctuary at church, and I stare at it the whole time. Your nerves will calm after you do this a lot! I drink lemonade before I sing because I hate tea. If you like tea, go ahead and drink that. Also, try to see if you have any friends who can come with you. If not, just "make the judge you friend". Be friendly politely. By the way, you probably do this because you have never done this before. The spotlight is on you. You will do great.

Lots of good advice so far. However, I don't agree with drinking a lot of water. A little is fine. Drinking water has been overrated. The whole 8-cups-of-water-a-day thing is a myth. If you haven't been drinking a lot, don't start now. If your mouth gets dry and you don't have access to water, bite the insides of your cheeks, or think of a food or candy you like. It will bring forth the moisture you need for your throat. There's not much you can do on such short notice for your range or making your head voice stronger. These things take training and practice. Perform in front of people today. When it's time to audition, walk in like you are a first-class singer, and do not make any excuses! If you are expected to speak, do so as a winner. Speak like someone who DESERVES to be chosen. I'm not talking arrogance, here; just self-assurance. These things you're going through are totally normal, and the only way to get past them is to perform and audition more. Accept that you will be nervous. It doesn't have to work against you. After 30 years of performing I still get a little nervous now and then. It's keeps me where I need to be to do my best. Take a few breaks today. Relax in a chair, close your eyes, go through every muscle, tighten it, let it go, until every one is relaxed. Breath long, deep, relaxing breaths. Imagine yourself performing at your best. Go through your whole performance in your head. Don't let your muscles tighten up again while you're imagining. Do this, also, as you're going to sleep tonight. The important thing is to imagine yourself performing at your best, without the dry throat, without being intimidated by the judges. Best wishes!
