How to put an acapella over an instrumental?

Tips for pulling together a somewhat decent acapella group?

  • I'll put this very bluntly- our acapella group SUCKS. I really can't figure out what the problem is. We're mainly on pitch and give it as much energy as we can, but it just doesn't sound...right. Our concert is in two weeks and our teacher says he's not sure if we're gonna be ready to perform. Our goal is to prove him wrong...please help?!?!

  • Answer:

If your harmonics are on point, it has to be your rhythm. Not everyone has a good sense of timing. You guys may have to use a metronome (not for the performance though) until you get your rhythms in sync. Remember acapella has to be on point and precision with the harmony and rhythms to really rock.

Even if the rhythm isn't there, it will still sound fine if you are getting the pitches. "Mainly on pitch" for an a capella group is going to be bad. If one person or voice section is off at all, it's going to ruin the chord. I would revisit your pitches and make sure everyone is on. Make sure you are breathing fully to support the pitch. If you post a video, we can take a listen and see if we can tell what the problem is. Good luck! :-)
