How do I get into the music business?

  • I'm a singer, I've been singing in church my entire life...and I always get complimented and told that I should become a professional singer. I have a voice that sounds like Katy Perry or Pink...anyways...what are the steps I need to take in order to start recording music? Thanks!

    you can try posting videos of yourself on youtube to see if you can get publicity there. you can try singing in bigger markets (like clubs and such), you can try to audition for music producers. if you play instruments or know someone who does, you can sing and play and produce the track yourself and try to promote that. you obviously will have difficulty putting up tracks on mainstream radio, but if there are stations in your area that are willing to play your singles, you can try to approach them and see what they say. research online for anyone who is looking for artists or if there are any auditioning places in your area. you can also produce the music yourself and eventually create a CD and be on an independent label. a record deal is simply a record label offering you there resources so you can make them your money. however, they aren't going to give you these resources until they know that there is DEMAND for your music and they know that you are READY. They want to see that you can handle the industry, they don't want to TEACH how to play live shows and TEACH you how to write songs - you need to know how to do that already. Record Labels aren't your teaachers, they are just your resources. record labels want artists that are in DEMAND. what is DEMAND? when people around the country are asking you to come play live shows in their city when people are anticipating your new songs and records. They want to know, FOR SURE, that if you were to release a record - that people would buy it. They want to know, FOR SURE, that if you were to play in New York, people would come. So how do you build this demand? Start playing live shows and writing your own songs. Set up social networking sites for your band. (the truth is, you have to take advantage of the internet, and most bands do - regardless on how they were discovered) Continue to play your live shows as you gain experience, build connections and build a fan base. Eventually, (hopefully sooner then later)your band will write a couple songs that you guys really enjoy, and that the crowd really enjoys. Go spend some money, and record the songs professionally, put them up on your social networking sites and then people will know what you sound like when they stumble across your page. Sooner or later, you guys will hit a spot in the local music scene, you'll get a couple frequent fans and you'll have a whole bunch of songs and a pretty steady set list. Why not do the Bieber thing and post yourself on youtube? Judging by the success of that ( which isn't great) why can't you have a go? To record music; Buy a dictation machine, or even use your phone, perhaps beg your parents to pay for a recording session. Click record.
