How do you get a record deal?

  • My friend is an amazing singer, and would love to have a record deal. Is there any small record deal companies in UK ? Ones that will give new artists a record deal? If so, could i have the company name, and maybe some background info on what she would need to send to them.     Go to open mike nights and karaoke bars. Karaoke bars may hold contests. Look for the contests that hold resume worthy prestige. I was a finalist for our local NW Idols held in the Rose Quarter (where they hold concerts and professional games). The location of the finals was what made it prestigeous. You put something like that on a resume and send in a demo of your talent and you may get an audition for a deal. Just remember that demos need to be original music and lyrics because of copyright material. You may even have to hold off on sending a demo because of legal issues... I'm not sure. Open mic nights are your best option. MySpace music helps to promote your original material too.

you need to prove to record companies that you can become famous on your own. get some successful gigs, become a youtube sensation, record a demo, etc. Record labels don't like to take chances with people so youll need to prove that you can become successful first. Also, develop your own style, image. They are looking for spirit and personality, and edginess too. Something different. They want something that sells.After that, look for a manager and they'll possibly help you out with record companies.

she'll need to get gigs and try get her name out there if she can get far in singing competitons theres always going to be people from record companies looking to sign people from the semi-finals etc

Well you can A) go out on a limb, record a demo, send it to all the near by radio stations, and record studios B) sing in public every chance you get (which is still difficult to get a record deal) C) go to college specialize in music, with that experience it can ease your record deal search as well because all the experience looks good, besides gaining that along the way is a good thing. Well I would say if that's all you will do is look for a record deal your life will have a lot of rough times, but if you early want this then I say go for it.
