How do you Vibrate your voice when your Singing?

Help! Im stuck singing in my throat...?

  • This is hard to describe online, but: when I sing it sounds like its stuck in my throat (my teacher says) ((It doesn't sound nasal, my voice is just stuck, and it sounds weak and breaks within half an octave or so)), it's down to bad habit that I've developed as I've only just started lessons. I can keep in tune, and I'm good at aural assessments, so that's a start. I'm having trouble finding and singing in my head and chest voice, and a lot of the time I just sound very 'breathy', even during the warm up humming exercises. (And my teacher says your nose is supposed to vibrate when you hum - mine doesn't. But, I can make my nose vibrate by making it more nasal, but then it sounds awful and breathy and still stuck in my throat). Has anyone else had this problem? What can I do? Help!! D:

  • Answer:

I'm not sure that I understand exactly what you mean, but I understand the last part. Your nose vibrating has to do with resonance, and one way you can improve resonance is by singing scales on certain sounds. Singing just an average major scale on the sound "Ngh" like the "Ng" part of the word "sing", and concentrate on pushing the sound up from your throat to your nose. Another sound that you can use for it is the "Brrrr" sound, where your lips kind of vibrate. I don't know how to explain it better, but that's how my singing teacher helped me improve when I had a problem which sounds kind of similar to what you're going through at the moment!

Are you sure that you are activating your diaphragm when singing? Is your mouth open enough? The breathiness is not good at all, and is usually a sign from not activating one's diaphragm properly. The voice should never sound nor feel strained though, so be careful to not go to that other side because there is a risk for vocal nodules!
