Opening the throat when singing?

SINGING Help!!! Throat tension and?

  • There are TWO problems I have, that have ALWAYS been my frustration with singing. First, When I sing, I feel like I am REALLY flat. I record myself and I sound flat. What can I do to sound sharper, more in tune & on pitch, and have the vibrato shakey sound when I sing to sound better like Justin Bieber? Cause when I sing it's like I'm talk-singing, it is super flat and there's no tone/pitch; that nice pretty sound, it's just flat.. My second problem is I feel like I am singing way too much through my throat, once again talk-singing. When I sing in normal volume, I feel really uncomfortable like there is so much tension in my throat I don't sound all that great, which is probably also a cause for my first problem. When I do sing from my QUIET, head voice, I sound fine and it is comfortable, but when it comes to singing louder as to where you can hear me, there is too much tension on my throat, even if all the air is coming from my diaphragm. What can I do to correct theses problems? Please help, THANKS!

  • Answer:

There is no quick-fix. The muscle tension in your throat is normal for most people. You may try singing more relax pitches for your voice range, also try to warm up before singing. Sing scales going up a half-step each time while blending each note. If your singing flat, then compensate for that and think high. Try to sing a little higher than you would normally. Mostly you want to keep your muscles from head to toe relaxed. Open your mouth almost like a yawn when you sing and let the sound out. Hope this helps!
