How do you improve your tone (in singing)?

Will smoking improve singing tone?

  • Before we start, yes I know smoking will wear down the lungs. This means that breathing will be restricted, which will lower stamina when singing. However, regarding TONE of the voice and tone only, does smoking help? There's many singers (Such as M.shadows & Chester Bennington) who have what i can only describe as a 'husky' tone to their voice. Is this a result of smoking? I've managed to get my voice almost into Tune (i've played guitar for 7 years, trying to move onto vocals now) but it's very plane, deep and there's no definitive sound about it. How can I improve tone, will smoking help this? I've never smoked before, starting to wonder whether to for this purpose or not.

    nope. if your doing this to singing sh*t to get famous, n you dont, then you will just be stuck with a bad addiction and a horribel sounding voice when you talk. i wouldnt do it. id rather you take lessons or just practice. just think of the risks for the future!

Smoking MAY give a raspyness to your voice, but that will take a long and damaging time. The best way to get that fire or huskyness is to practice. Try buying The Zen of Screaming.
