I have a singing problem.

How do I fix this singing problem?

  • When I'm singing along to a song or singing with other people, I have to sing to match the pitch of whoever else is singing. It's like my brain won't let me sing along without doing that! When I'm singing by myself I can sing at whatever pitch I want. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this? Has anyone else experienced this?

Yes, this happens to almost everyone who is starting off in harmony; You are not alone! If you wanted to sing something else different to the tune you can hear, aka a harmony, don't stress if you can't do it at first. It takes a lot of practice and getting used to. I don't know whether you are a classical singer or a pop singer so I will try to be as general as possible. One of the most important things is: don't listen to the tune you can hear. Block it out of your head completely. You may even need to block one ear at first, most people do this when they're starting off. When you sing your alternate part, think of how that part goes and only that part when you're singing it. Don't think about the tune or any other parts or it won't work. If you still have trouble staying on your harmony, practice it by yourself, without any other music in the background. This will help you to get to know your part better and you will become much more confident with it. If you're in a choir, try standing next to someone who is singing the same part as you and is really confident and loud. This will help you a lot. I hope I have answered your question!

I'm a guitarist of many years, so perhaps it's a bit easier, but many years ago I joined a band with a great lead singer, and he approached singing harmony this way..... Say you're on a C chord. There's only 3 notes in a C chord...C, E and G. If the lead singer is singing a C, he'd say...you sing the E, and he'd tell another to sing the G. We were expected to have our harmonies down pat at the very next nights practice. If you have a musical instrument in the house, and some way to record yourself, you have to practice singing all 3 notes...the C, the E and the G, and perhaps an octave above the C. Eventually, you'll get a much better grasp at singing harmony. Best of luck.
