How can you record vocals over an instrumental?

How do you record vocals without recording over the beat/track?

  • Im trying to record some vocals but when I record and play back I hear the beat. Im trying to record the vocals by its self then go back edited the vocals and then mix the beat behind it! Is there a way to do this? please let me know links, video, tutorials ill accept it plz thx in advance

  • Answer:

I don't get how you get your timing with the vocals without a beat. Usually you start with the beat then lay the vocals over top. what are working with anyways. 4 track? 8 track? etc. If your trying to record the vocals while playing the beat. your mic will pick that up. It has to be the other way around. Or two separate channels.

record in separate tracks first off (i really hope i dont have to tell you that) get better head phones, the ipod ones hemorrhage sound out of them, get closed ear, studio monitor headphones, you wont hear a peep out of them when you record wearing them. make sure you stand away from the mic a proper distance, if you're using a condenser mic that is. other than that, the simplest way is to turn the volume down.
