How to sing with your diaphragm?

10 POINTS: How do you sing with your diaphragm?!?

  • I understand that you need to inhale a lot of air then your stomach will push out like a balloon, but when you sing, I use my throat and the high notes still aren't that good. THREE QUESTIONS: How do you NOT sing with your throat? Seems impossible! Second question: How do you sing with your head voice? Third obvious question, how do you sing with your diaphragm?! lol

  • Answer:

You need to get an actual voice teacher. If you just check Yahoo Answers this question comes up a lot, because people are confused a lot over what the heck all that stuff about diaphragm and not singing from the throat, and head voice, vibrato, etc. etc. means! Someone once quoted that voice lessons started at around $200 and went to $2000 or more. In what universe? Prices are all over the place. You want to check with the music departments in local schools and universities for names of people who give individual voice lessons (either they work there or they know of teachers they can refer). Most teachers charge by the hour or half-hour (or give students an option of both). Scheduling how often you go for lessons is very flexible as well, so you might want to try going for a short time to see if you like the teacher and think they can help you. There is no overnight secret. Learning to breathe is difficult to master. You actually need to train various muscles involved in singing. Furthermore, it's not only a matter of how you take air in, but you need to know how to let it out in a controlled manner that allows that breath to support the tone when you sing. If you could train yourself, you would have by now, since you obviously seem very determined to improve your singing. One thing about the throat. What you shouldn't do is push or force any notes--high or low--to get them out. It'll just end up hurting your voice. Sing what comes easily and naturally to you until you get someone to show you all those confusing techniques and make sure you are doing them correctly. Good luck.

Ok so, you have the right idea. Sometimes my choir director will have us do a few excersizes to get the feel for singing withthe diaphragm. Put your hands palm to palm in front of you, one facing down and one facing up. Now push with both hands, as if they are each trying to push the other one in the opposite direction. You should feel your (abs? haha) tighten. This is the basic feel you should have when singing with that part of your body. When breathing, no movement should occur in your chest. The breath should come from your lower back as if you have wings sprouting from the small of your back. Your ribs should expand. As for not singing with your throat, I won't give you an excersize but I'll give you a metaphor. Think of your throat and stomach like a hose. The stomach, where you sing from, is the water source. The throat is the actual hose part, only directing and shaping the water (and/or your voice). Think about all of this and practice singing a few long notes each night, controlling your breath to your best ability. Good luck! :)
