Tips on how to become a better singer?

I'm think I'm talented and I wanna become a country singer,, any tips on how?

  • When I was in 4th grade I was the star of a major school production. After that I was a supporting role, and I get standing ovations at talent shows. My parents think I should do The X Factor, but I wanna be signed with a record label for country music or become a professional actress. I live and breathe music, it's my whole life. But my parents put me down by saying only a little group of people get to do that. I feel like I'm nothing when they say that. It hurts, a lot. But does anyone know of any Performing Arts high school in NYC? So at least I'll try for it. Or any TV auditions? It's my dream and I would like to achieve and prove my parents wrong.

  • Answer:

The first, most important question is, do you actually live in NYC? If the answer is yes, there are several excellent performing arts high schools: Laguardia High School for Music and Art and the Performing Arts Frank Sinatra School of the Arts Professional Performing Arts School If you live in Brooklyn, you might also try to get into the performing arts programs at Edward R. Murrow High School. All of the above are public schools, so you must live IN NYC. They are all VERY hard to get into.

Put your act together and call up places like coffeehouses and ice cream parlors and ask them if they ever feature musicians. If yes, introduce yourself and try to get a booking. Begin locally and non-profit. You may begin hiring yourself out after you have built a significant following. Be sure you stay on top of your studies and go to bed at a decent hour as your parents have told you.

They aren't putting you down by being realistic. It's true...only a few get to be famous or well known. The fact that they suggest you be on something like the X Factor shows that they support you but they want you to be realistic. I can promise you, you'll hear ALOT of judgment and know first-hand rejection of some sort if you audition for that show. In order to be in the music or acting business, you need to have a tough skin and be used to rejection, disappointment and criticism. Even if you don't go into these industries, you still have to get used to opinions, judgment, etc....but it's more extreme in the entertainment industry. You aren't mature or old enough to handle it...and that is obvious. It's not people being mean...it's just a fact. Your parents aren't treating you with kid-gloves and they are being honest. It's up to you to think "Well, I'm going to work hard and make my dream come true no matter what." Don't go into this to "prove your parents wrong"....that isn't the right reason and you're showing your immaturity. YOu think they're against you but, in truth, they are your biggest support system and (unlike the real world) they will always be there for you. If you want to get into the entertainment industry, do it for yourself....not for anyone else, not to show anyone up. You need to go to school...at least make it through high school and get your GED. Continue to study music and perform when you can. Get involved in bands or have your own gig at fairs, dance halls, bars, etc. Whether you act or you do music, you'll need an agent...and, if you're under-age, you need your parents consent. When you're of legal age, you can do what you want...but you will need an agent. If you want to go to to a performing arts school, look them up and do the research yourself. If this is something you really want to do...then you have to put in the effort.
