How to improve my singing voice because of a chest cold?

  • I've had this bad chest cold for about a week or so, and it has hit my singing voice hard, i've tried everything(drinking tea with lemon and honey, gargling warm salt water, sucking on a lemon, taking medicine and much more disgusting things) but nothing is improving my singing voice, and its nothing that serious because i talk just fine and it doesnt hurt at all, i just want my regular good singing voice back, and i want this terrible chest cold to go away...what should i do...PLEAZ HELP ME!!!

  • Answer:

Rome wasn't built in a day. And your chest cold won't go away in any less than a month. Just keep doing the sorts of things you have been so far; get plenty of rest. And, no matter how well your speaking voice might seem, it's also a good idea not to put any more strain on your vocal chords than absolutely neccesary. Why not learn a really good, new (old) song, while you're in the process of nursing yourself back to health? How about "Silence Is Golden" (1967), recorded by The Tremeloes; it's a classic! Good luck & good heath.

You won't be able to get rid of it entirely. Here's something that helped me: do what my son and I call "self-waterboarding": http://www.neilmed.com/usa/sinusrinse.php Basically you make a warm saline solution and then blow it up your nose with a squeeze bottle. It doesn't help the chest part much, but it really clears out the sinuses, which I think helps even a chest cold. You will also need to face the fact that you can't sing the way you can when you're well - not to say you can't sing at all. Just, if you HAVE to sing (sometimes we do), drink a lot of liquid when you do - that seems to me to help my voice - and take it easy with what you sing. Don't reach for your highest notes, for example - you might make it so you can't sing for awhile.
