I have problems with singing correctly. What can I do?

Problems with my singing....can anyone help?

  • My singing teacher is preparing me for my Grade 1 singing exam. In our warn up exercises, I can reach an A and that's my limit. Bearing in mind that's on a very good day with maximum concentration. I find my top lip twitches involuntarily, and it makes my face contort and my eyes water. She says she can't see it, but it's the eye watering I'm worried about. Does anyone know why this happens? When I go up into the higher notes (changing from an 'eeh' sound to an 'aw' sound) my mouth is already parched and I need to cough. My singing teacher says she knows I can do it but I need to stop coughing, but I can't help it. What are some good ways of pulling in your diaphragm and lifting the soft palate? I find this difficult on he higher notes and it hurts a little. Can anyone help me? Thanks!

  • Answer:

go over your vowel sounds at home, and try to pinpoint what exactly is happening. It's possible that your range could be lower than you think, so try singing the lower notes to see what happens. It's also possible that, as you are twelve, your voice is changing and you need to work on perfecting and placing your vowels. Ask your singing teacher about this. To lift the soft palate breath through your nose before a high note.

First off, it'd help if I knew what vocal part you sing. Second, you are probably holding too much tension in your face, jaw and subsequently, throat. That means you are most likely singing in an area that is out of your range and you're straining. If you have all these twitches and other problems, your body is telling you it's time to quit singing. As for lifting the soft palate, it's somewhat tricky to do, but it can be learned with time. You have to drop your jaw and imagine yourself yawning.
