Singing lessons in Sydney?

Should I get singing lessons?

  • I play piano and get lessons. i really want to get singing lessons too, and i'm booked in to start singing/piano lessons next week. But i'm worried that i'm not a good enough singer and that I will embarrass myself. Are singing lesson only for people with really really good voices? Also, what do the teachers make you do in singing lessons? Obviously you have to sing, but are there exercises or anything like that?

  • Answer:

I'm a vocal coach, and singing lessons are DEFINITELY for anyone who needs to improve their singing, whether professional already in a career or absolute beginners. Even the top stars of Opera take singing lessons once in a while, they are indispensable to keep your voice healthy and in the same position, so that you can really master it. No singing lesson is the same as no singing teacher is the same, but generally speaking you start with some warming up exercises, one of the most common is "humming", then according to what style you are studying it varies a lot. It's really complex to give a detailed answer as every voice has different strenghts and weaknesses and lessons should be individually tailored. Don't feel embarassed, you would be surprised to discover how many average singers can become absolutely outstanding with the right exercises. It's a bit like going to the gym, there's always space for improvement regardless of your starting point, but when somebody is fit everyone will notice. It's as if you said "I'm too fat to go to the gym". If you are that's the main reason why you should go. Good luck, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

I've worked at music stores that give vocal lessons before. They're definitely not only for people that can already sing really good. You should have heard some of the people that went in there for their first time! There's lots of different exercises that they get you to do, some of them might seem a bit ridiculous but they do work! Good luck with them and don't be shy around the teacher, give it all you've got so he/she knows what your strengths and weaknesses are.

go ahead and try out the singing lessons. if your voice teacher is any good and knows what she/he's doing, she/he should be able to help you improve.

If you play piano then you should already have good rhythm. I don't think many people are amazing on their first singing lessons so don't worry about it, plus your teacher won't laugh at you if you muck up. They may ask you to sing a song you already know but if your not comfortable with that then they may just do some scales with you and give some advice on good technique and not to shout and scream etc. They may give you exercises as homework also but as i said, don't worry about it, it will be a good experience and build up your confidence!

don't know anything about singing lessons but i'm pretty sure you don't have to be really good to start out. that's why the singing lessons are there...for you to gradually get better good luck!

As a voice major myself I can tell you that in my personal experience when I went to my 1st voice lesson 3 years ago I personally sucked. So, don't feel bad about embarrasing yourself. Thats why the lesson is private! :) As for what you do in singing lessons, my voice teacher spends half of my lesson (1/2 an hour) on technique and we do scales on different vowels (ooh, ah, ee, eh, oh), we do sirens (sighing really high and low), and we work on mouth positions and basically she picks on me for every little thing. The second half of my lesson (the other 1/2 hour) is to work on my repertoire (songs that I am working on at the moment). We also focus on performing on stage as I am a performance major and just have a good time. If you would like to know more there are really good vocal exercises on YouTube. just go on there and search vocal warmups or something similar to that. Hope this helps! Musically Yours, Stacy

You are there to get SINGING LESSONS. If you knew how to sing, you would not ask for singing lessons. You don't have to know how to sing. They will gradually teach you how to do it. They do not expect you to go in thee singing like a pro. Go for it. That's why they are offering it.

if you want singing lessons, then go for it. everyone has the right to singing lessons. even if you're not a great singer, lessons will improve your singing. and the course will be fun because youre interested.
