How to use your diaphragm?

How do I use my diaphragm when singing!!!!!?

  • I asked what would help me sing better, and every one kept saying "use your diaphragm!" "use your diaphragm!" "use your diaphragm!" ........I DONT KNOW HOW TO USE MY DIAPHRAGM!!!..................... *great now i sound like an idiot*

  • Answer:

You're not an idiot. Yeah, "Use your diaphragm!" Now why not tell me HOW, genius? The first trick is to breathe "low." When you inhale, don't feel it in your lungs. Instead, feel your gut expanding out like you've just eaten a huge meal (or you just went from not being pregnant to being six months along). The second trick is to push "against" the air going out. If you "breathe low" and start to sing, your air down there can escape very quickly. But if you actively "resist" letting the air escape as fast as it wants to, you develop the "breath support" that singers harp on as crucial for being able to stay on-pitch and are able to hold notes/phrases much longer. It takes a lot of practice, but if you concentrate on doing that when you sing (and work on it a couple of times a day for about 5 minutes or so) you'll be able to sing from your diaphragm very well.

As a vocal coach for many years I must agree, but also disagree with the poster above me. To breathe in your diaphragm you must do so with a lifted feeling, similar to the way a dancer is always told to dance lifted, instead of plodding heavy on their feet. The area just beneath your rib cage should expand both front and back, as well as side to side. Breathing low will not give you enough to work with. I do agree that once you've filled the diaphragm with air, you must push against it deflating too quickly. Visualize that your hands are inside your body and that you're pushing against the walls in resistance. Singing is like driving a car: both need gas in the tank to operate. So fill up that diaphragm with air before you begin and don't rely on shallow, short breaths to sing. You will notice a sustained power in your singing if it's done correctly. Good Luck! - DJ
