How do I know if I'm singing from my diaphragm?

  My dear Ashlee, as a voice major who will be graduating this fall I have to tell you--this was not great. I have heard worse...you are not completely tone deaf, but it was quite out of tune.(I hate the use of "pitchy", it has no real place in music--stupid American Idol) The key to singing successfully is listening....if you are going to sing a song that you have the music right there with you, there is no reason you shouldn't be right in tune. You could have a nice voice--the tone and timbre of you voice is a little pinched but could be ok with work. My advice to you is a) don't listen to people who don't know what they are talking about and b) if you really like singing and music then learn about it--find a teacher in your area and be willing to listen, learn and work. So many people think either one CAN sing or CAN'T. And that is not really the case. To be more than just a mediocre singer, practice, teaching and a lot of work must be put into it, just like anything else. Someone can be a talented basketball player, but if they don't practice and learn, they will never be anything more than ok. I don't know what age you are but one thing that is so important: as you grow DON'T imitate pop artists--be your own singer!
