How To Sing Properly?

How do you sing properly?

  • Ok, ive heard about all this stuff about singing posture, how to sing properly etc. I am just overall confused. When I get done singing, my freakin throat hurts everytime and im sick of it. What is the proper singing position of you neck, jaw, throat...etc How do you correctly sing from your diaphragm and know that your doing it correctly... How do I sing high pitched without my vocals sounding high pitched-Without messing up my vocals or singing with not my real singing voice........ What are the main things that I NEED to know about singing, positions of body when singing (neck, throat etc.) Ive tried doing ALL KINDS of different stuff to try to find out how to sing correctly but I just seem to be wasting my time. I dont know to properly do some of the, probably, easy things that singers do to sing properly.... Please help me out. Ive been singing, and it seems that all im doing is hurting myself. I AM NOT going to stop singing so dont tell me that. PLEASE just give me some good answers. I have been through ALOT OF CRAP trying to develop my vocals properly and I am SICK AND TIRED of seeming that nothing is working....... What is the proper ways to singing!!?????

  • Answer:

first, it would REALLY, REALLY, REALLY help if you got a vocal coach. please trust me on this. i used to try and research like you on singing, and in the end, i just gave up cause my throat hurts. anyways, i'll give you the basics of what my vocal teacher told me: posture and breathing is the foundation for singing. don't pay attention to anything else, yet. focus on posture and breathing. learn how to breathe using your diaphragm. your tummy should extend, not your test. eventually, once you get used to it, you can feel that your lower back is moving as well, and it's supposed to. dont worry, anyone can learn how to breathe throughtheir diaphragm-- we just forgot how. you're hurting your throat because you're straining. try songs closer to your range. if it hurts a little, keep going, but if it actually HURT HURTS, then stop singing. because our vocal chords are muscles, they will hurt a bit too when you work with them, just like the rest of our muscles. also, for posture, remember to stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, head up and leveled, and with back straight. and remember to relax your body. it's become a bad habit of me to put my hands on my hips while singing because that's what my teacher made me do during breathing and vocal exercises haha. but i like to, anyways, because i can feel my stomach and lower back moving/extending as i breathe correctly. try some scales, too. and for a tip, use your stomach to push towards high notes. don't hesitate to reach for high notes in your regular voice. by use your stomach, i mean to literally flex your abs to "push" yourself to reach that high note. it definitely helps. and you're singing through your throat, so that's why it hurts, as well. do a hum, but not a breathy hum. experiment with it until you feel your cheekbones kinda vibrate. your cheek bones should feel like their vibrating as you sing, too. anyways, i learned all that (^) stuff in a little over month. that's 5 thirty minute practice sessions. i learned more than thta, actually, and really, my range has expanded greatly. it's so worth it. you don't know how much better you'll get at singing if you get a voice coach.
