How do I sing in my mixed voice?

Physically holding larynx down to find mixed voice..?

  • So i am trying to get better at singing, and i feel like I have never really had a problem with pitch, but being 16, and having my voice get lower over the past few years, I was kind of bothered that I couldn't sing along with alot of the songs I used to enjoy because I cant sing high enough. I started to try to sing in mixed voice but didnt really understand how to go about learning. I found a video by Brett Manning from his singing success program, where he said that your adams apple corresponds to the position of your larynx, and it is important to keep this low when singing higher notes. In the video, he physically held his adams apple down while singing high notes just for an example. I tried to do the same thing, and sang along with Just the Way you Are, which is normally out of my range, but I was able to hit most of the notes besides some of the really high ones towards the end. I'm sure it wasnt just head voice, because it wasnt as weak and airy as normal, and Im pretty sure it wasnt my chest voice since my throat didnt hurt from singing those notes, which it normally would. It didnt necessarily sound good, but it was in pitch mostly. So I guess the question is was this actually mixed voice? I know that its hard for you to say without hearing it, but I mean is it even possible that finding mixed voice could be done by simply holding down your larynx? And if it is possible, why dont singing teachers just tell students to try this in order to experience it, rather than singing scales with different vowel sounds or whatever else they do?

  • Answer:

I have been a Karaoke singer since 1994, I have never heard of this Larynx effect before, I was told that you are supposed to sing from Your stomach diaphram and then through your Larynx to produce the sound, some people hold there head tilted slightly back for better sound, I do not use that system myself I try to hold my pitch of the song and try to get the right sound by listening to the music, having a fold back speaker does help too, but it all comes with experience and how you learn to manipulate your voice to suit the moment, I have a slight advantage with singing because I try to mimmick different singers voices, doing a deep Jerry Lee Lewis voice and lifting it to a Tiny Tim style falsetto voice in my version of the 50s hit "Great Balls Of Fire" I have learnd to jump from one voice to another, I do other impersonations even Lady Gaga, but that's a different story, with a lot of practice you should be able to hit the sweet spot in any song, it all takes patience and practice to get there in the end, nothing is easy at first, but you will find your niche in the end, You might try taking singing lessons or just do it like I do, self train, anyway you never know you might do Las Vegas one day if you are serious about your singing, lots of luck. .....John
