Guitar Tuning: What is "tuning a guitar to D" and what is "tuning down 1 step or half a step"?
-
I have an electric tuner, and i am able to tune my guitar to D, like it says to do for some tabbed songs i want to play, but i dont know if i only tune the low E string to D or if i tune all six of them to D. Also, what is a "step" when tuning, and how do i tune a guitar to a specific "step" ? Thanks.

Answer:
A standard tuned guitar is tuned to "E"; the thick string is low E and the high is high E... In the alphabet, D comes before E, and it is a lower tone (and C is a lower tone than E and so on). A full step down means that each string is downtuned 2 frets and a half step means they are all down tuned 1 fret. From thickest to thinnest, set your strings to DGCFAD - that's D tuning... Sorry, your questions are easy concepts that aren't so easy to explain. My advice: look online on sites, forums, and videos, and look for your answers. I really hope this helped.

Brian: If a song calls for "drop D tuning" you tune only the low E (thickest, lowest pitched) string down to a D. If it calls for "open D tuning" you tune the strings thus (low pitch to high): D A D F# A D. This allows you to play a D chord by strumming the open strings (no fretting). When you tune your low E string down to a D for drop D tuning, you are tuning it down a full step. (A half step would bring it down to E-flat.) When playing guitar, moving by one fret equals a half step. Moving two frets equals a full step. If you tune your guitar to open D tuning, you are tuning the low E down a full step, the next two strings (A and D) are not changed, the next is tuned from G to F# which is a half-step, the next is tuned from B to A which is a full step, the final string is tuned from E to D which is a full-step.
