What does it mean to be 'out of key' in music?

So honestly RHH, What does "pop music" mean to you?

  • Well I've seen the words "pop music" thrown out a lot, usually used in a derogatory way. Maybe it's just because I don't know anyone that would say "Yeah I listen to pop". In my experience, people usually say rap, rock, metal etc. I used to think pop music was easily identifiable and a universal term. You know, stuff like Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Justin Beiber etc. Then a few days ago Metal Quality posted a question with a link to an interview with R.A. The Rugged Man and Rude Jude from Shade45 arguing about Hip Hop. R.A. said Kanye West was pop and then Rude Jude said "Hip Hop is Pop Music" that struck me. Then I was watching a video by Chamillionaire about the record label putting pressure on him to do more mainstream style music, he said the label was calling "Ridin" pop music. Then I started thinking, well pop comes from "popular" so if you said all mainstream rappers were pop, you'd be right? I did some researching about the history of pop music and what musicologists characterize pop as and it seems to back up that statement, but whenever someone calls a popular mainstream rapper "pop" it's seen as derogatory. Maybe I'm just thinking too much... TL;DR: WHAT COMES TO MIND WHEN YOU HEAR THE TERM "POP MUSIC"? WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU?

  • Answer:

The Beatles were pop. MJ was pop. Eminem is pop. Not bad music, just what's popular.

Pop Music = Popular Music EDIT: The reason why pop music is perceived to be garbage is because these days, in order to be "Pop" you have to appeal to little girls, cos they are the primary consumers.... now hip hop aimed at little girls? thats garbage... all this kanye, wayne, gucci, plies etc

Very good question... i hate it when people confuse pop with popular music to me it is a genre itself just like rap and rock people like britney, madonna, lady gaga do come to mind in pop... its seems similar to r&b if you get me any rap is rap.. because thats what it is its impossible to say rap is pop because its like saying opera is jazz. and when people use the term 'pop' on here they are basically sayin the music sounds too commercial and not real hip-hop

Well when i hear pop i think mainstream music that appeals to 14 yaer olds. Like soft core dance and party tunes with uptempo beats, catchy hooks and alot of treble. With singing or rapping without the use of complex metaphors and similes just plain lines that everyone gets the first time you here it.

Popular music.. lol. Whatever is on the radio or TV. And Rude Jude would be right.. nowadays, hip hop is pop music. And pop probably has a negative image because popular music is always considered to be bad.

i listen to some black stations from time to time in my impala and i have to say pop music is lil wayne ya hurd i might be a redneck and scare of black people when they keep coming to my house but i do listen to some black stations and i have a thugged out impala ya feel me?

Here's my key to determining the difference between Hip Hop, R&B, and Pop as played on Top 40 radio stations, since they all blend together these days: Hip Hop: Vocalist raps. R&B: Black vocalist sings. Pop: White vocalist sings.

This really has nothing to do with the rapping, it's about the production. If you listen to instrumentals of many popular, current hip-hop songs, you could picture Rihanna or Beyonce singing over the same track. That's hip-pop. Hip-hop is pure hip-hop when the beat is organic, and it wouldn't sound good if you tried to sing over it because it was meant for rapping. Like a Gangstarr beat for instance with the boom bap drums. Now I'm not saying that there's real and fake hip-hop or any nonsense like that. They're both hip-hop, just one has pop infused into it. And that's fine. It's just 2 different ways of doing things.

Popular music that sucks, not saying there isint good pop music, i mean MJ was good but basically theres Hip-Pop, the fusion of crappy rap and pop (Lil Wayne)

okay most pop music sucks but Kanye is beast. just sayin. i know im going to get some haters be really, the man is a genius EDIT: @JIMMY: lol. "black stations" in "my" impala
