How do I write lyrics?

How do you write your songs? Lyrics and or Music wise?

  • well, i try and write songs in my bedroom (both the lyrics and Music) but my room is pretty small, so i often feel confined; my songs tend to suffer a bit because of that. so i was just wondering, where do you go to write your songs? and how do you actually write them? do you have a routine? or do you just get the actual music down first? thanks guys :)

well being a musician i think i can answer this question. First off yo should be somewhere comfortable. So for me its either in my room, which sounds a little more spacious than yours, or i go out in the woods behind my house climb a small mountain ans then about half way down the other side is a small lake that no one ever goes to and i can just play for hours out there. Then you need to get your words going, now first off dont try and put words to music, its harder. try and write words with no rythme to them, just keep a good flow and then set the words down once you have gotten some good ones. Also keep this in mind "Don't bore us, Get to the chorus". think of janie's got a gun by aerosmith, how does it start, "janies got a gun". it starts with the chorus. the chorus is the part peaple hear and remember, thats where the monster riffs are. so think about that, verses are good, but all they do is lead to the chorus. then once you have good words down, say u play guitar like i do, then just make a wordless song, you know, just get a rythme going that you havent played before maybe use some different chords you dont usually play and create a nice lil thang going. then take your words and try and lay them over your music, f it doesnt quite work try writing the words a lil different, or the music a lil different. this is pretty much all it takes. also dont over wrk a song. if you begin feeling great about it and start hating it after a while then stop, before you hate it and bring it to someone u trust, and show them the parts and peices and ask if they think it could go anywhere if so take a break and come back to it. sorry for the length its jst i care about my fellow musician and i like to help.
