What does this prescription mean?

What do the numbers on my prescription mean? ?

  • On my contact lens prescription it says -2.75 for left eye and -1.75 for my right eye. But what do these numbers actually mean? And what is the norm?

  • Answer:

The minus says you are short sighted (can't see things far away). Your left eye is worse than your right ( the bigger the number the more short sighted you are. That is quite a mild perscription - its not considered moderately bad till you get to 6 and some people have perscriptions in double figures.

Other answers

The numbers specify how the lenses will affect the light entering your eyes. There is no "norm", it specifies what you, personally, need. Other people will have different numbers that specify what they personally need.
