Why Does My Eyes Hurt?

Why do my eyes really hurt after an eye exam?

  • It makes me really hate eye exams because all of the lights that they shine in my eyes irritates my eyes. When I leave and step out into the sun it takes me a while to adjust. Why do eye exams bother my eyes?

  • Answer:

Do they put the drops in your eyes? They make your pupils open wide (so they can see into your eye better) but is can take several hours for that effect to wear off, so in bright sun, too much light goes in your eyes; maybe take some sunglasses with you the next time. Some places give you this tinted plastic thing to drop in behind your glasses when you leave, to work like sunglasses until the drops wear off, but I don't like it, my eyelashes constantly rub against it.

There is a condition called photophobia. In this condition, people are really sensitive to light and can experience pain. If you were dilated (drops put in your eyes that make your pupils really big and make everything up close seem fuzzy), you'd also have trouble with light. It might not be pleasant, but these tests are for your benefit. We're watching your eyes and checking to make sure everything looks healthy.
