What does no RIO on a job posting mean?

What does this mean in a job posting?

  • From my experience, a normal job's hours would be 8 hours a day and 40 hours a week. What does it mean if a job was to say, "must be able to work from 9:00-6:30"? Is this weird?

  • Answer:

Not every company has "normal" hours that match up with what you might be used to. I would guess it could possibly be that the business advertises that they are open those hours, and so they need to hire someone that fits the open position. That is the shift they have available. It may be a salaried position, rather than hourly, or they may be willing to pay overtime. Either way, no reason they can't specify what hours they'd like you to be available. They probably put it in their ad in order to be up front about it from the start, so they don't waste their time or yours if you are someone who has to be home when the kids are, or some other circumstance.

It probably means they want someone there to open and close the business. However, in order to have you only working 8 hours a day, there will probably be several lengthy breaks, such as an hour for lunch and a 30 minute break before or after, or a 1.5 hour lunch break.

In my and my husband's experience, even 12 hour days are not abnormal. If it is what you employer requires, then it is up to you to decide if you can and are willing to do it. It probably literally means, you must work 9.5 hour days. Don't worry, though, you'll have an hour lunch more than likely.
