I am pregnant and was just told I will be training someone for my position? am I going to be fired? I have been working at my current job in a nyc law firm for 8 months. I found out i was pregnant a month after I started working there and told my boss, the director of the firm and the HR department about three months after i know I was pregnant. I had a meeting with the HR deptartment and they told me i wasnt covered under the family medical leave act since i haven't been there for a year. They did say since i was a good worker and on good terms they would give me a leave of absence for 6 weeks, unpaid, but not covered under the family medical leave act (told me i was an at will employee but pretty much I could take their word I would be guaranteed by job back after my leave). The director of the firm my main boss) had a meeting with me today and the woman who oversees my workflow and i was informed that they would be hiring someone to take over my psotion while i am on my leave, and I would help assist in training her. The firm is under structure change and they will be using a new computer database system and will be combining administrative units together. I was told by my boss that this woman who they will be hiring will most likely stay on a permanent basis because they can use her and blend her in with the firm structure change. He (the director) also told me that he know s how worried i am about not getting my position back and he asssured me I was guaranteed 'a job' when I come back from my leave. I noticed they do tend to move pepople from position to position in this firm. I started out as an admininstrative floater and I now my primary role currently is in case management (the only two people in case management is my supervior/the woman who oversees my work and me, who she has been training for the past five months and I am still in training) and some back up collection/accounting work. Even though I was assured 'A JOB' when I get back, I am still very nervous. My fiance isnt working right now and I am the only income we have. I just am skeptical about training someone for my job. Should I teach her the bare minimum so I still know more than her? Should I just go with the flow and take their word on it? Should I document this meeting today? Am I protected in any way? Also, this office is very political. It is about who you are, who you work for and so forth. I have been on good terms with the firm and have been doing pretty well keeping up with my workflow and i am sure they can see I am doing my best. The only thing they do have on me is personal phone calls to home, thanks for the snitches in the office. I was warned today not to make personal phone calls or have people call me but besides that, I was told my performance is well. Also, the woman who oversees my work is a very abrupt woamn (in other peoples eyes) and people have said she is not a good trainer. In my case, that is not how it went. I learned a lot from her and me and her have a lot of similar personality traits and get along well with each other and that is why my main boss teamed me up with her because I learn/train well with her. One thing that is in the back of my mind is my boss is afraid the new hire will not train well with her and that is why he is having me train her and then after he will show me the door...I know, I sound like a crazy person but I have a huge responsiblity on me...raising a family...I need this job and they know it. I appreciate your input. Thanks.

Answer:
Just as your Mother told you dear, there are not guaranties in this world - so you just have to do the best you can - and worrying about things won't help - but will make you "second guess" your every move and thought. If your "fiance" will not come up to bat and marry you - then your law firm has a lot to worry about. 1) your morality - pregnant and not married. 2) your work ethic, they know that you have a lot of phone calls - coming and going! 3) will you return after 6 weeks - and who will care for your new born? 4) Will you have to continue supporting your "fiance" (live in lover) and yourself and child? You really have put your employer on the spot! The fact that you are even considering that after you train your replacement - that the boss will show you the door, bespeaks of your lack of belief that your employer is a man of honor. I'm sorry I can't offer you any solace in your predicament - this might not be the best forum to discuss your life style and career moves.
