How to become chief executive?

  • im starting my A levels next year at college and i was just wondering what subjects i should take to allow me to hopefully become a chief executive? thanks

  • Answer:

Yes you can! I know people with biology degrees who are CEOs for companies which sell IT equipment! As someone who took the A-Levels he 'thought' he should take, my advice is for you to take whatever A-Levels you will do best in - that is, those you enjoy the most and will get the best marks. If you definitely want to work in a certain industry, you might want to think about how you will enter that industry (if the entry-level job is engineering, then as Karen says you won't get in that way unless you do engineering at Uni). However, CEOs are well past that kind or work - they are chosen according to their ability to run the company. Many CEOs are engineers, sales people, finance workers, HR managers etc etc. The key is to get to the top of whatever speciality you choose, and then develop your ability to run the larger organisation. It doesn't really matter what discipline you choose, as long as you get to the top. CEOs from engineering know nothing about sales, but they need to be able to think about sales and marketing if they want to be good CEOs. So you know, I am a sales manager and hope to develop my knowledge of finance and operations so that I can move into general management and eventually be a CEO. Good luck to you!

Business and finance is what you should look for while you choosing your subjects. The chief executive is responsible for the success or failure of the company, you need to have the knowledge of operations, marketing, strategy, financing, creation of company culture, human resources, hiring, firing, compliance with safety regulation, sales PR etc. All the bove falls on the CEO shoulders. You need to start as operations manager then operations director then to managing director or the chief executive.

Degrees in the field in which you want to be a chief executive. You can't be a CE at an engineering company with a dental degree. So decide that first.
