Why did you chose nursing as a career?

I have no idea what career path to take?

  • its really getting me down now, i sit at my laptop for hours job searching but i cant find anything i want a career in, i do have a job but its defiantly not something i want to stay in, i am a domestic cleaner in a hospital. does anyone know any websites or organizations or even any ideas for me to chose from? i have had ideas like nursing or paramedic but have now completely changed my mind, i then had thoughts of hotel work in the hope to build myself up but ideally i would have my own hotel if i was to go into it which isn't going to happen as i have no money!!! i always find something to put me off any ideas i have and i see people i went to school with in nice careers and im embarrassed and depressed. i am a 21 year old woman with only 3 gcse's; D in science, E in maths and a B in english, i have no other qualifications and would love someone to help me! thank you x

Hi There Firstly, take a few days to settle down and relax. The whole world is in the middle of economic uncertainty as far as employment goes and you are certainly not the only person in your position! It's really important you look at the positives and believe it or not you have a lot of them! Firstly, you do have a job which is providing you with income as a domestic cleaner. That's great in itself, you are actively working and have something on your resume / CV to prove that you are not determined to spend your life on the couch living on welfare payments. Secondly, you are 21! Most people your (and my) age have not began a "career" and are either studying, partying or working in simple jobs like you are. Of course you'll have the exceptional one or two people who aced High School and have gained internships etc. but having known people in similar positions on a personal basis they are all in high pressure jobs working long hours towards career advancement. Generally they are stuck in companies which promise the world and deliver very little. What caught my attention is the fact that you stated you were considering working in hospitality and working your way up. That's a great idea, but you immediately dismissed it because in the long-term you'd like to run your own hotel and you don't have any money. Do you realise what you have just stated? You are mentally putting yourself in a future position without realising that with that career advancement you'd be earning and learning enough to one day realise that goal and start your own hotel. Yes, it's a while away but if you dismiss the idea now then it will never happen. I'm 21 years old and I see people I used to go to School with in all sorts of positions. Some are at University studying 6 year degrees, others are working at grocery stores whilst studying part-time, some are real estate agents, some are personal trainers and others are more focused on getting out on the weekend and partying all night without earning a cent during the week. Personally I left School at the end of Year 8 - in Australia that's unheard of (we have a 12 year schooling system). I have began my own business doing something which I feel passionate about and I don't for one second "compare" myself with others. Career satisfaction comes from within - not how other people look at you. You need to chill, take some time off surfing the internet and be gentle with yourself. Find what you are really interested in doing personally in your own time. Then work your way out from there in order to find careers that are linked to your personal interests. If you can work that out, then theoretically you'll never have to work a day in your life as you are simply doing what you enjoy. One last word of advice: If you are feeling depressed which is common at our age then this will hinder your future potential. Sudden changes of mind and feelings of embarrassment when you see other people doing well isn't really healthy and without a healthy mind you are not in a good state to decide what you want to do in the future. Perhaps you should print out your question and bring it along to your doctor and discuss it with her / him. You may find you have some mild depression that can be treated giving you a whole new outlook on life. Whatever you do, be proud of yourself for working, look within yourself for career ideas and don't for a second compare yourself with others. Just because you don't have the money now to open a hotel doesn't for a second eliminate your future potential. By the way, feel free to PM me if you'd like anymore advice.
