Should I leave my nanny job?
-
I have been working full time as a nanny for two doctors for the past 2 years. I don’t call off, I’m reliable and I even come in on very short notice. The children love me and I’ve practically raised the youngest one. When I first began the job I was given a “contract” that said I would be paid for holidays and for whole weeks even if I only work a partial week. It did say I wouldn’t be paid for the weeks the family didn’t use me, but that they had to give a month’s notice as to when they wouldn’t be using me or that I wouldn’t be getting paid. It also said that I would get a $1 an hour raise after 1 year and that I was entitled to 5 PAID sick days. After working for them for a year, I was sick once vomiting and I got it from their children and I wasn’t paid for that day! Furthermore, it said that I would be only responsible for the children’s laundry and their messes while in my care….. I feel so unappreciated. I haven’t gotten a raise. I drive the children ALL around town on my own gas and in my car and am not compensated for gas and we all know gas prices are HIGH. Also, the parents are late a lot and I’m not talking 15 minutes here and there, I’m talking hours with no phone call to say they are running late (I’m married and have my own life!). I know they are doctors, but they are also very big into tennis and so they are not always late because of work just FYI. I don’t get paid for holidays and there have been a couple of times where I was contacted the night before to be told I wouldn’t be used for the following 2 weeks in a row because the family would be going on vacation and I also didn’t get paid for that. Every Monday I come in, the sink is piled high with dirty dishes and the dishwasher needs to be unloaded. The house is always a wreck after the weekend and I am asked to deal with it. I am also asked to do things like clean out the refrigerator or to run a personal errand for one of the parents, again not compensated for it. I feel like I go way above and beyond and every day I don’t feel appreciated. I feel like crap when I come home from work every day. I feel like I’m being taken advantage of and this has been going on for 2 years. Now, you might ask why not speak up about it, but in the beginning of my job there was a simple situation that I spoke up about and the mother was very rude to me about it and it made for a very uncomfortable work environment for me for awhile. So, I don’t feel like I can speak up about all of this to her. Therefore, is it wrong to look for another job and up and quit? I want real input, nothing mean or irrelevant to this topic. Thanks! P.S. I’m a college educated nanny and have years of experience with excellent references.

Dr.s are notorious cheapskates, almost as bad as lawyers. Tell them you would like to review the contract they signed with you and see if some of the discrepencies can be rectified. I bet they come up with a raise for you but they will still be inconsiderate cheapskates. You will know not to sign an new contract that does not address how the children are to be transported to their activities on the parents nickle not yours the next time won't you.
