Working on my resume and don't know what to put under "skills." Help?
-
So far I have the following sections on my resume: education, honors (I have a LOT of honors), work experience, student activities, and community involvement. I know I should have a "skills" section, but I'm not sure what to put. I have some basic Mandarin Chinese skills, nothing fancy/extensive, can obviously use Microsoft Word and Powerpoint pretty well, but other than that... Ugh. I feel talentless. Any tips/suggestions? I refuse to lie on my resume, so...

Answer:
Instead of a "skills" section, you need an "experience" section if you 've held other jobs? If you you have never had a job, list your honors and educational focus. Typically, I would say no objective is necessary and certainly a vague one is NOT advised. If you have no experience to speak of, YOU will have to let the company know what you want to do. So an objective needs to tell them what kind of position you're looking for and what you bring to the company. Too many people make the mistake of focusing on themselves when the company wants to know what you'll do for THEM. Make it as detailed and unambiguous as possible.

Your resumes should be modified as to fit the job that you're applying for and you need to modify the objective and skill set accordingly. Try to put yourself in the hiring companies place, what skills would they think are useful/needed for the job. If you do have some chinese language skills that can potentially be very useful in many businesses as that is such a big market and has been growing at a very fast rate.
Put in a skills section that is focused on the job you are applying for. You will have loads of skills from your experience as a student and in the community, plus of course your interests. A good set could be -planning and organising -team player -good interpersonal skills -deliver results -achievement orientated strong communication skills You would have all of these if you worked effectively on one college or school project team
