What jobs am I qualified for?

  • I have just graduated from college, and I am looking for my first permanent job. I have: *Four summers of volunteer experience at a public library *Two summers of custodial work experience at UC Davis *A BA in Political Science from UC Davis with a 3.5 GPA *Odd-job experience - house-keeping, baby-sitting, painting furniture, etc. ...That's it. No permanent work experience, no internships, nothing. So with qualifications like that, what am I qualified to do? What should I be applying for?

    In this very horrible employment climate, you really have little choice. You need to apply for anything and everything that even remotely fits your qualifications. Even entry level positions, as they can be the way to get into an organization and work your way up from there.

Well, why did you major in poli sci? Are you interested in it? Were you thinking about working in government? If you are into politics and public policy, I suggest moving to Washington DC, New York, or Boston to get some sort of job at a non-profit, think tank, or a federal/UN agency. Since you have no related experience, you will have to start at applying for internships even if they are unpaid. If you are looking for jobs in other fields, start out looking for internships. They are easier to get and can possibly lead to full time positions. And there's always grad school...
