How to pick a career? how did you pick your career?

How to pick right career for me?

  • I'm going into high school and i want to start deciding the right career for me...any good tips or websites on how to do that? :) thank you! :)

  • Answer:

I think you should first of all revise the stuff you like (e.g.if you like drawing, consider becoming a graphic designer). Ask people you know about their careers and how they chose them. Some useful websites are: www.myfuture.com , www.princetonreview.com , www.act.org/discover , www.careerkey.org , mappingyourfuture.org That's all I can think of. Hope it helps...

There are personality and aptitude tests free on line that will give you someplace to start. Perhaps it would be good to take several different tests on different days and compare the results. If you are lucky some of the suggested career fields will appeal to you. If so, do some research to see what those career fields entail as far as education, skills, and tasks. Many career fields are very broad and it would be good to narrow your focus. For example, if you want to be a designer, try to decide what you would like to design. It is also a good idea to talk to someone in the chosen career field. Most professionals are willing to spend some time talking about their jobs. For example, if you think you would like to be a doctor, ask your doctor about her schooling, grades, med school and how she likes her job. Do not make the mistake of judging career fields by TV shows or hype. Lawyers are no smarter than anyone else, and not all police are in CSI. Good Luck - Th Practical Mentor

The best advice I can give you is to start getting jobs that expose you to different things you are interested in. For example if you want to be an engineer, go to a local engineering firm and ask for a job. Explain that you are interested in engineering to see if it is right for you. If you have a hard time finding something, consider working for free. Volunteer that you will work for free for the first little bit and if they like you and things are working out, then you can maybe start to get paid down the road. Do that for a few months and then switch to something else you are interested in. Keep it up until you have a better feel for what you like.
