Issue at work.....................?
-
Okay, I work in a kitchen. I started my shift yesturday afternoon to find that there was a significant amount of stuff not put away, as well as one bin almost full that wasn't emptied. Whenever I work in the morning, I'm told by multiple people, including the second boss in charge, to put away everything, and change the bins before I finish my shift, to have everything sorted and prepared for the person doing afternoon shift. Anyway, several times now the person working in the morning before my shift never prepares things properly. Now, the guy who doesn't do it, is a person who worked in the same position for about 30 years, but recently, everyone moved to a new kitchen, with new rules .etc. This person, however, complains about just about every other person who does the same type of work as him. Basically, he goes off his head if people don't do things which he has to end up doing in his shift. Anyway, I felt annoyed that I was doing everything I was told and being considerate for the person working in the afternoon, when I'm workng morning. But he doesn't show the same respect when he is working in the morning. Anyway, he has done this several times now, and I was now annoyed with it. So, I go to the comment book, and just write done the tasks that he didn't do and nothing else. I thought it was a good way to communicate, since it is the "comment book". The comment book, by the way, only had jokes and jovial making fun of people, but my comment was the first serious one, which I though, was the books original purpose. So the next day, I come into work(in the afternoon), and the supervisor, asks me to sit down with her. She first explains that, the head boss and the morning kitchen hand(the guy I've been talking about), said that they are very pkleased with my work, and that it was fantastic. But then, she said, that the head boss, saw that I wrote a comment about the morning kitchen hand not doing his work properly. She was puzzled why I wrote what I did in the book. She also asked if it was a joke, like all the other things written in the book. She said that when the head boss shown her the comment, she said to him, that it could be a joke, but that he got angry when she said that. She said that that particular kitchen hand has working for 30 years, so i shouldn't never say anything like that about him. Then she told me that the head boss wants me to apologise to him and the kitchen hand next time I see them. I was absolutley shocked. Its like a double standard, that kitchen hand can come down hard on all the other kitchen hands when they don't do tasks properly(to suit him, when he starts his shift), but no one should dare say anything about him. Hes not in a higher position then me, or any other kitchen hand who works there. My friend, who also works with me, says that I'm entirely in the right. Just because he may have worked there longer, and that he is a lot older than me, doesn't mean that he can't be criticised. If it were any other kitchen hand I wrote about, the head boss would have complied with it. But because it was this particular kitchen hand, who my friend, thinks is good buddies with the head boss, it was suddenly personal. What do you guys think of this? Am I in the right or not? I just can't believe the reaction I got.

Answer:
I think the issue here is the nature of your comments and it is available for everyone to read. Communication books are a good idea, I've always used them but something like this really is of a 'personal nature'. People have to be careful because of the Data Protection too. You would have been better raising the concerns with your manager/supervisor in a more confidential way not broadcast it which your colleague could foresee it as as libel as it's written and disclosed to third parties. Learn a lesson from this and as hard as it is, apologise to the guy you commented about as you went about this in totally the wrong way. He's not going to trust you again. Your supervisor will be aware now if this guy starts to bully you which is not in his best interests either. All complaints have to be treated with confidentiality to an extent - you really should not have taken this into your own hands but let your supervisor be aware of your issues for them to deal with effectively.
