Would you choose a government job or private job?

Job I don't like for good money or study for a job I do like?

  • I have two options in front of me. I've successfully applied for a job in Japan to work in a translation/projects role for a local government. The problem is that the application process was like a year long and in the meantime (thinking I hadn't got the job) I started studying Engineering (Civil and Structural). Had you asked me 1 year ago I would have said i would choose the job in Japan, but in all honesty I don't see my career or future being there. I love the country and all, but Australia is my home. On the other hand studying Engineering has been amazingly challenging and rewarding. I love it more than I ever thought I would and look forward to having a career in the field. However the govt. has stopped supporting me and I can't really afford to do it unless I work almost full time (I've been looking for work for about a month now without success). I'm running out of shares to sell for food money which is worrying. The Japan job will give me good money, but will break the momentum of studying. At the same time the two aren't mutually exclusive. The job is a 1 year contract (possibility of renewing) and the dates line up perfectly with me coming back and studying again. The money isn't so great that it could bankroll me studying once I get back though. If this was you would you either: A - Go to Japan and work for a year in what will likely be a rather boring job and come back to study after that, pushing back graduation a year (to age 31) B - Keep studying and graduate a year earlier from a degree you love, getting work in an industry you love? Note: At this point you've already lived in Japan a couple of times working and studying. You're 26 with no real assets or liabilities. The job is not in the direction of your career. You have enough money to last maybe three more weeks without a job while studying Engineering and you have a load of exams over the next two weeks.

  • Answer:

If you can find a way, any way, to continue with your studies, do it. If not -- well, a year in Japan doesn't sound so bad!

In the way you worded your question it seems as though you are hoping for the answer to be B. Which in the long run may make you happier, the real question is whether you choose potential happiness but current suffering in financial issues or choose current unhappiness with potentially less financial issue. Do what makes you happy and you never know if u keep your hopes up you may find a job there in Australia that can help you pay for schooling, if not there are always scholarships and other ways to pay for school that your engineering degree will more than likely cover for you in the future. Just know that no matter what you choose you should never have any regrets

1 rule to success. do what you love the money will follow succesful is the man who wakes up in the morning goes to bed at night and is happy with what he does in between. finishing up your study's is best but if you cant support yourself and cant find support any where then quit and work. you'll know when you are at that decision because there will be no other option.save up the money get a loan from a bank or family member, whatever means neccessay go back to school. if you take option A, think of it as a year towards your japenese proficiency certificate. speaking two languages will do wonders when your applying for that enginering job.
