I currently work a full-time and part time job. My full time is from 7-430 and I make around 48,000 a year. My part time job is 9$ an hour as a loss prevention associate and I work 9 hours Saturday and Sunday and 3-4 nights a week 6-1030, so like 20 hours a week or about 160$ a week. With traffic and everything I can never go home, so I have to just drive straight to the part time job. I've been doing it for a month and it's starting to ware me down a little and I'm only sleeping about 4 hours on the week nights and maybe a little more on the weekend. But it's also making me tired during my full time job and I can't even get groceries or get to workout at all because I'm consistently working. After taxes I probably make about 2,500 a month but with my partime I make around 3,000. My rent is 500, 150 utilities, 115 phone, 380 car, 215 insurance totaling and lets just say 250$ miscellaneous bills + 200 gas, 200$ food. With driving to this part job I probably pay 50$ a week in gas but if I didn't do the part time job I'd probably pay 15$ a week. But after all the bills I'd have like 590$ leftover if that. Do you think I should continue to work the part time or just quit? My one friend said I should focus on my career job and get the rest I need and just live within my means. Just trying to get other input..Thanks a lot

Answer:
Work until you have 6 months worth of emergency living expenses put away in a savings or a cd that you can break. No one should live without this. You never know when you can lose a job, have medical not covered by insurance, or have major car repairs. Make this your goal. Then, you can quit this part-time job.

Read 'Talk Turkey's' answer - it makes a lot of sense! I just want to add tho' - why are you killing yourself over a daft part-time job, when you could use that time much more usefully?? If you invested in your career by taking some night/day-school courses you could up-skill your main job and have some free time for socialising as well. Best of both worlds. (Wow, you must have a lot of energy tho', if you can hold down two jobs and still go to the gym to work out! That's incredible....). So, to sum up - work, save for a rainy day; then work and study. You'll be fine. Good luck.
I used to work 7 days a week over 2 jobs simply because I wanted to earn more but I quickly came to a realisation that, because I had no time off, I spent more trying to make up for it so it turned out to be a losing battle. I only work the one job now and I come out with a lot more than what I was saving when I had 2 jobs. I also have a lot more time to spend with my other half and time to go out and relax. You really have to ask yourself why you're doing 2 jobs. If it's for the money then fine but is the amount you're earning worth the effort you have to put in to make it work? Can you see yourself carrying this trend on and if so how long for before you're burned out? I would agree with your friend about concentratin on your career. Why do 2 jobs when you could work on improving your maing career to the point where you'll earn the same or more than you are working 2 jobs? The added benefit would be that your work hours would be based on 1 job so you'll have more time for the same amount of income. Good luck.
If you can live on $48k a year, then live on that. An extra $160 a week is nice, but not if it's at the expense of your overall health, lifestyle, and career. If you don't really need it to survive, stop overworking yourself. I don't know what the average cost of living is in your neck of the woods, but I live pretty well on $34k a year here in Illinois.
Health is more important than money. Quit the part-time job and live within your means. There is no point in doing the second job if it is making you unhappy.
