What direction should I take in my career?

What is a good minor for a major in photography? I need career direction advice?

  • I want to major in photo, but am also interested in sociology, humanities, English, psychology, foreign languages, philosophy and many others. I am planning on earning a certificate in holistic health along with my AA. I am hoping to use this certificate for something (not sure what?) so that I am able to maintain a desirable job while I spend a few years working towards my degree or perhaps even as a back up if things go awry. I'm not sure what I want to do as a career, although event/portrait photography is appealing. I have a daughter so I can't afford to be a "starving artist". I need something that I am likely to find some success in but that will also peak my interests. On top of all that, I am a conservationist. I've taken a few classes so far regarding the science of the earth and technology of environmental conservation; I plan to take more and any career that has a positive impact in this manor is preferred. I've got too many interests and am so confused. I need some solid direction, so any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!

There's a difference between liking a subject and loving it with passion to study it and make a career of it. Since you don't know what to do with a sociology, humanities, psychology or philosphy degree . . . then don't study those as a major. Make them an elective class you take. Photography is great, but you can learn what you need to as a minor. Unless you want to teach photography, choosing it as a major isn't a good idea. Imagine what you want to do in the future, study that for your degree.
