Tips for getting a job please?

Please help me with 2 questions for a job application?

  • I really want this job, can someone please give me some tips and good ideas on how to improve my chances for getting the job? These are the 2 questions: 1) Why do you think you'd be "Unbeatable" for this role? 2) We'd like to know more about you. Please outline your relevant work experience, including organisation names, dates and responsibilities. Please provide examples of any career highlights

  • Answer:

The first question, and the last part of the second question, are not to be taken too literally, but are basically opportunities for you to mention things about yourself and what you have done (relevant in some way to the job you are applying for) that could be picked up for discussion during an interview. Remember that the most appealing kind of candidate is someone who will apply themselves with spirit to the employer's purpose, throw themselves into the business, go to some trouble to do a first rate job every time.

Always a difficult one part one but it could go something like this. I am not sure if unbeatable is the appropriate wording but I will say this and that is I believe I can do as good a job as anyone else can in this role. Then explain how you have previously worked as a Team player and/or leader, explain your achievements and what or how you achieved them. Its time now to sell yourself but be open and frank and to the point. Do not go on and on and if interrupted and asked about a point you have made, then you have their interest and its a great moment for you. Expand briefly on the point raised and carry on selling your self. Remember one thing though, the more information you give the more open you are to interrogation and although I have demonstrated how this is a positive it can also be a negative so be prepared and always be honest. Part 2 only you can answer but hopefully you will have incorporated most your answers into part one of your question. No matter who tells you be prepared, don't panic its a simple thing, its not. Its ok to be nervous and its ok to be seen to be nervous just whatever you say in the interview room, make sure its the truth. Good Luck The Tax Doctor

For Number 1, quite honestly, if you can't answer it yourself, you may not be suited for that job. I could tell you what I would say about myself for a job that I might apply for, but only you know all the details about that job and about yourself. Make sure, though, that whatever you say, you back it up with evidence. Don't say things like "I feel I am unbeatable..." or "I believe..." since those are weak arguments. Say "I am unbeatable because..." and then back up everything you say with solid evidence. For example, I would NEVER just SAY that I'm detail-oriented; I would say, "As you can tell from my impeccably edited resume, I'm detail-oriented." Etc. For Number 2, they're really asking for a resume, possibly with a little narrative attached to make it more personal. Good luck.

Okay, only you can answer part 2 as we have no idea what your role has been etc. Question 1 is a fairly typical spin on why they should pick you over others for the job. So you need to think about what your best points are in relation to work. You need to think about are you always very punctual, do you engage fully as part of the team or as leader of it. If you're going to be managing/leading a team what is your style, how well do you find it works for you, if others have always praised this, let the interviewer know (hopefully your references will back this). Don't forget that you're always keen, enthusiastic, enjoy challenges etc. You're not afraid of hard work and if necessary you would be happy to put in a bit of extra. You're supportive of junior staff and of course you know your client base and how to keep them happy. You're innovative and would be hoping to develop and evolve the role further. You're smart and always highly professional etc. It doesn't really matter if you're applying to run the country or pick up litter for a living, you're the best thing since sliced bread and they're going to be lucky to sign you up - aren't they! Don't forget that you will need to allow yourself time to breathe and them to ask questions while you're telling them how fab you are. Highly important to keep your eyes & ears open for questions which should enable you to expand your answers beyond simple yes/no. If someone says tell us more or can you give us more of idea of your previous role and why you've decided to move on, then explain it. If they're just wanting to clarify that you had the job for 5 years, that's a simple yes/no. By the way don't forget that whenever you get asked the dreaded, what are your flaws/weakness (negatives), always make them a positive...you can a bit too driven, sometimes people might think just because I'm young I don't have the necessary experience/expertise or that I couldn't cope with stress but actually I do and I'm willing to prove that 100 times over.... Good luck.
