In the commerce/business field, especially accounting, is there lots of people who can't get jobs?

Who is to blame for that?

  • I am a job seeker struggling to find any job, especially a better job in my field of study (accounting). Everywhere I look employers are all saying the same thing. MUST HAVE x number of years WORK EXPERIENCE plus the degree. I see that in every job ad I come across. I have the degree, but I do not have the many years work experience. I don't see how I can get work experience if I do not get the work experience to begin with. There is something else that concerns me. I keep hearing people telling me to be persistent when I apply for jobs to the point where I am begging and harassing the employers to give me a job. Isn't that bad advice to get from family members? For example, if I apply for a job and the employers say something like we will call you or do not call us. We will call you if you are the right person for the job. After they made that perfectly clear as to how the hiring process work. Should I take advice from others and do the opposite of what the employers explained and just keep calling and showing up every single week checking on the my application status? Even if I did show much persistence every week and still do not get hired, who fault is that? Am I still to blame for not getting the job after showing lots of persistence and enthusiasm? I am just saying I did everything I was suppose to do and it did not work out. I am in a bad position where I need a better job right now and I don't know what else to do. What is a person to do who is in a bad position where they need to make money right way rather than waste time and effort looking for a job? Unless I am lucky to go look for a job and get hired right on the spot, I say applying for jobs is extremely time consuming when I need to make more money right at that very moment. It could take weeks or even months or maybe even never get hired. Entry-level, internship, nor did volunteer work help my chances at getting hired.

  • Answer:

In the current economy, with or without a degree, you are going to have to start at an entry-level position to get the experience you need to qualify for a better paying job. Unfortunately, most students are under the mistaken impression that if they get a degree they will not have to work their way up in a company. This is not the case. You have to have the degree AND experience to get the kind of job that pays what you want.

If you are seeing the required education and work experience in every single job posting you look at and you don't have that, you may be looking for the wrong kinds of jobs. If all you have is the degree and no relevant work experience in the field, you have to set your sights lower. The job market is currently flooded with people, many of whom have education and experience and who still can't get hired. As to your other concern, harassing an employer is not the way to make a positive impression and convince them to hire you. If I told someone exactly how the hiring process works, and that I would be in contact with them if I was interested in talking to them further, having them call and show up on a weekly basis would convince me not to hire them. Obviously they can't listen and follow directions. While I certainly can appreciate a single phone call after a reasonable amount of time has passed, continued harassment is just that-harassing. Please don't take the mentality that it is somehow your "fault" if you aren't able to get a better job immediately. It is extremely unlikely for you to get hired on the spot, especially if you are looking for better positions. The only jobs I've ever known to hire on the spot are jobs with very high turnover rates, which usually pay minimum wage and are terrible jobs. Yes, getting hired takes time, and if you don't have the time, then you have to look at alternate options.
