Is it necessary to protect our environment at any cost?

Hostile work environment,.... what to do?

  • I am currently employed as a manager at a hotel in the Portland area. Due to harassment circumstances and bullying in the workplace by one of my subordinates, I feel that I am being forced to quit my job. I have filed police reports for intimidation, harassment, defamation and hostile work environment which I have also brought to the attention of BOLI. I have filed a formal complaint with BOLI but I was told a formal investigation would only take place after a certain number of complaints were made. I did seek legal advice but again I was told that I needed to start with BOLI. The biggest problem here is that the ownership has received formal complaints about my coworkers and I fear for our safety with this "workplace bully." The owners refuse to reprimand or handle any of the complaints we have submitted to them. The things that this employee has done have violated the policies and procedures as stated in our employee handbook yet the owners will not do anything about it. As a manager it is my responsibility to protect my staff members and myself against employees that are creating a hostile work environment or is harassing them. However, the owners have made it very clear that I have no authority to reprimand or fire this employee and he is exempt from getting terminated because he is too "valuable" to the company. There are a lot of slanted and unfair rules here. This is clearly out of my hands. Below are some examples of what this "bully" has done: * Lies to other staff members, hotel guests and third party companies about me and other employees' performance * In writing, he has referred to myself and other employees as "lazy black bitches" * Makes accusatory statements about the employees and myself to the owners that are false * Has referred to the other employees and myself as "idiots" in various emails to the owners. This is being tolerated by owners. * Has made strong suggestions to the owners to terminate all of the front desk agents and the manager because we are "a waste of space" and "just seat warmers" * He has gained access to our security cameras web address and watches the employees from home on his personal time to monitor every move ....and much more! I know I am on the right track but unfortunately this is going to be a lengthy process.... I have a large amount of stress, anxiety, loss of sleep/appetite, etc from this situation and DO NOT feel like returning to work. It sucks! If I quit I will be screwed out of a job that I have been with for over 2 years. Unemployment will not cover my cost of living until I find another job. So... Is anyone in need of an experienced and hardworking individual with over 6 years of experience in the hotel industry? Willing to relocate :)

  • Answer:

This sounds like what my company will eventually progress into as it grows.

Wow, I feel for you. I hope you're documenting everything (sounds as if you are) and keeping the records at home. A large law school here in my state has student projects where they can work on cases like yours for credit. Have you checked to see if you can get free legal consultation? Good luck finding another job, as that will be the best for you in the long run.
