How do I quit my job?

How do I quit my stressful, part time job?

  • Okay this is going to be a little long, so bear with me. So I work at this restaurant part-time, and have been for nearly three months now. I started in early July, and now it is into the school year (I am at university) and I am still working there. Recently I found out that my manager has been saying unkind things to people behind my back. She thinks that I don't appreciate my job, and that I only want to "socialize" when I am just trying to get time off to do my school work. However, when I speak with her (I have not brought up her saying I only want to socialize yet) she tells me that I am doing a great job, and if I need help, I should talk to her. All in all, she is a terrible manager, and I want out. The trouble is, if I give her two weeks notice, I am afraid she will just fire me on the spot, seeing as what happened to a former employee after all she said was "the management sucks" and was fired almost instantly thereafter. This job is stressing me out so much that I am actually afraid to go to work, because I don't know what kind of drama will be thrown at the due to my manager's inability to manage. To add, I have applied at another place, and I am very hopeful of that job, but I have yet to go in for an interview. In an ideal situation, I would just quit my current job, and wait for a call back from the other one, but if I DON'T get a call back, then I am without a job and, ultimately, without money. So, long story short: what do I do? I hate my job, and my manager, but I feel like I have to stay there because I am still uncertain of this job I applied for. This is all very stressful, and it is making me rather ill. I can't give a two weeks notice, and I want to get out of there NOW. What and how do I do this?

  • Answer:

How do you know it is your manager and not your coworkers? Drama is in every workplace. Perhaps you handled it incorrectly there and it is time to move on but, do note you're going to find dramas and work place politics everywhere you go. It is up too you to manage it well. What do you do now? Give your two weeks notice unless jobs are sparse where you live. In that case, get another job and then quit your job. Giving notice is not the same as insubordination 'management sucks' and you shouldn't be fired.
