Is Public Relations a good career to go into?

Getting over uncertainty for career in PR/Publicity?

  • Has anyone here ever tried to overcome shyness to go for a career in publicity/public relations? I'm considering publicity for entertainment but of course I, like most, am not fond of speaking in front of people. I also don't know how good I am with being in charge of people or being assertive although it has always been easy for me to meet and talk to people but I'm not the best conversationalist. I hate coming up with small talk. I'm considering taking the certificate program at UCLA Extension. Currently I'm 26 and working in retail and I've been unhappy with life for years. Does one learn to overcome that during such a program or is it expected that you would already be able to stand and deliver? Also, I suffer from mild chronic depression (dysthymia). Any advice is appreciated, of course. I'm afraid of taking steps like this because I'm always afraid I'll pick the wrong thing and waste time and especially money I DON'T have since I don't make much at all and live in Los Angeles.
