How safe is government job these days?

My mom lost her government job and will be "terminated" in 30 days!?

• They gave my mom a letter of removal AKA you're fired paper. My mom suffers from some mental illness and requires medication on a daily basis. She has great insurance right now. Does anybody knw if she can qualify for unemployment or medi aid? She is 45 years old. She works for the post office. Only true and helpful answers please.... God bless!

  If she is being terminated through no fault of her own, then yes, she should qualify for unemployment. She will also be able to continue her existing insurance via COBRA, although she will have to pay the payments herself. Check with your state's unemployment bureau -- many of them will pay a portion of the unemployed person's COBRA payments if they are unable to do so. She probably can't actually apply for unemployment yet, but she should visit the unemployment office and talk with a counselor and find out everything she'll need to do when the time comes. She should also talk to her doctor about her medication. If it's prohibitively expensive for her to pay for out of pocket, he may be able to prescribe a cheaper alternative.
