What is the current level of JSA?

Do you think it's fair that job centre (UK) have suspended my JSA money because i do a 2 hour course each week?

  • Basically, i want to go to University next year but i need Level 2 in Numeracy & Literacy, so i go to community college once a week for about 2 hours from 1pm - 3 - 3:30pm. Anyway, i signed on last Thursday and usually get paid on Tues, but i didn't get paid yesterday or today so i called them earlier and they basically told me that my JSA has been suspended because i have made myself unavailable for work. And this is all because of the couple of hours when i go to my college course on a Thursday! Do you think it's fair? I literally have no money now, i live with my dad and he cannot afford to lend me money, and i live in the middle of nowhere so getting to places isn't easy. I have been looking for work and it's tough at the moment, but i don't know what to do now i'm not getting paid at all.

  • Answer:

There is a form you can fill in which asks how many hours you study and what days. It also asks if you would be willing to leave the course if a suitable job came up. I think it also asks if the course you are studying will increase your chances of getting a job. I think there's a few other questions too. So long as you tell them what they want to hear (you will leave if a suitable job comes up) I think you should be ok. Unless you have done that and they still said no?

seems unfair - try contacting the citizens advice bureau and see what they say

You're a mug for telling them in the first place.

Contact them again and speak to someone different. If your course is likely to further your chances of finding employment (which it sounds like it would) then they should still pay you your JSA. However, a lot of people who work for the jobcentre are a bit clueless and don't actually know the full rules, which are complex and very dependant on circumstance, i know a lot of people who have been given misinformation by Jobcentre staff. Go back, and ask to speak to someone more senior to explain the situation and see what they can do for you.
