Covering letter for a job application?

How long should a covering/application letter be? Is two and three quarter A4 pages too long?

  • Hi, I've just completed my covering/application letter for a teaching assistant role, it is 2 and three quarter pages long. It is all relevant and relates how skills I used in previous positions are relevant and will help in the job role, it outlines my interest in the position, relevant qualifications, experience working with children and my commitment to the role. I have covered everything required in the personal specification list. Is this too long, I really can't see what to take out it is all relevant. Could I loose out if the letter is this long even if it is all relevant? Thank you in advance :)

  • Answer:

Okay, it is a little long, but if it is all relevant there is nothing you can do about that. Best bet would be to give a brief summary of your skills at the start, this way if they employer doesn't read the full thing, they still have an idea of your skills. This is the best i can offer i am afraid? Good Luck!

That's far too long and the people selecting for interview have not got the time to read all that a covering letter should briefly state- that you have attached a CV or an application form and wish to be considered for the post it's a covering letter, not an application letter

Far too long. About 10 lines is sufficient. All that info should be within your CV (to a point).
