How would I go about getting an IT job aboard?

16 years old - how do I go about getting a part time job?

  • I'm in my last year of school (year 11) and have quite recently turned 16 - finally old enough to get a proper job. I really want a weekend job as my paper round wage just isn't cutting it any more, and it's probably about time I moved away from that job.. Problem is, I just don't know where to start. What jobs can I get? How do I go about getting one of these? How detailed does my CV need to be? I live in the north of England so there are less job opportunities than in places such as London. Thanks

I would suggest looking into your High School's career department. You never know what you might find. There are lots of internships available to students and since many students don't take advantage of the resources you have higher chances of finding some really great opportunities. When I was in High School(Age 16) I befriended the career advisor and kept checking in till I found something appealing. When everyone else around me was working mall jobs and fast food, I had an internship as a bank teller and was actually learning a career. There are lots of things out there you just have to look. The easiest jobs to find/get while in HIgh School are babysitting, fast food and retail. Although it really depends on the laws in your state as to what age is required to work at certain places. The biggest advice I can give though, is that it isn't what you know, but who you know. Networking is the single most effective way to get a job. I would suggest socializing with some adults in church or school or even when you are just out and about and let them know that you are looking for a job. You could also talk to your neighbors and see if there are any odd jobs you can do such as mowing lawns, babysitting, gardening, housekeeping, or anything you can think of. The more people you know, the more opportunity there is. When looking for a job think of what you can offer them and why they should hire you. Also consider any passions you have, talents, skills or things you enjoy doing for fun. The more that you know about yourself the easier it will be to market yourself to others and find a job that you will really enjoy for more than just the income.
