How important is having a BFA for a career in graphic design?

  • hi, so im not sure if i should go to FIDM and get my AA in graphic design and see if i can benefit (career wise) from the schools connections/help, or if i should go to OTIS or Cal State Long Beach for my BFA in graphic design and try finding a job on my own after graduating like everyone else. How important is having a BFA in the field of graphic design? how far can i go in the field with only an AA? please HELP! im confused..

    Its is good to have a qualification in Graphic Design but not necessary to have the highest level of qualification. Graphic Design is alot about experience and work history. You portfolio must be strong and having experience in the industry is the main thing and work up the career ladder from there. Good luck with your decision.

What's great about an A.A. from FIDM is that it's the equivalent of a bachelor's degree from a CSU or a UC and just by taking a look at how successful FIDM grads are says a lot about the school and their programs. I would agree with the other person who answered your question; graphic design is about talent and you could have the highest degree and not have talent. You would be surprised how much work alone is involved in an A.A. from FIDM and how far the degree alone will get you. What's even better is you can pursue a bachelor of science in business management at FIDM after getting your A.A. and that can give you the foundation of the business side of the graphic design industry. Talk to an adviser from the school because they can give you the background about their graphic design program and their degrees. Good luck!
